Facebook Flirting: Missed Connections

By: Laurie Davis, Founder

Since the dynamics of flirting on Facebook are so unique, we're bringing you a four-part series on making the most of this social media platform.

"Missed Connections" are no longer limited to the Craigslist Personals Section. If you don't take advantage of the dating opportunities that are presented to you and say what you mean, you can virtually miss each other in real-time. Need an example? Take a look at the video below.

How can you avoid Facebook flirting fails?

Say what you mean! If you've already been on a date like these two have, don't hold back. There's no reason to delete things like, "I had a great time the other night," if it's the truth. If your crush doesn't reciprocate, at least you'll never daydream about what-ifs. It’s likely that you both want to say the same things.

Gain flirting momentum. Ask about your match's interests so you can uncover shared interest and date opportunities. For example:

You: What's up?
Your Crush: Not much just getting some work done, rockin' out to Pandora.

You: Fun. What station?
Your Crush: Bruce Springsteen. Don't judge.
You: Haha. I love it! Have you ever seen The Boss live?
Your Crush: Nope. But I did see Maroon 5 last week.
You: LOVE them!! I'm jealous. Do you get to shows often?

Your Crush: Hmm ... I wish I did more.

Now you have all the info you need to ask your crush out!

Don't IM overwhelm. The conversation in the video was too short, but it's also possible to talk for too long. The point is to keep your match intrigued. If the conversation gets dull or the topics dwindle, you'll lose their attention. When you sense this happening, say your goodbyes and log off. The goal of IM'ing should be to get offline with each other!

Get Interactive. No one can resist the latest funny video or a daily dose of cuteness, so posting a link in the IM will immediately get the conversation going. The more visual the conversation gets the better, since you want them to feel like they’re actually talking to you. But make sure you’re sending universal topics – not everyone cares about that funny thing your dog did the other day.

Seal the Deal. It’s easy to loose your nerve and say you’ll ask your crush out the next time you talk, but there’s no time like the present! Let’s go back to the IM convo above; even if Springsteen doesn’t have any shows in your area, typing a simple “Let’s find a bar with a juke box and use up all of our quarters,” gets you and your crush set for a date. The more natural you can make a date proposal, the more likely you’ll get a “Yes,” instead of a “Let me check my calendar and get back to you.”
