The 3 Best Times for a First Date

Here are three ideal times (and some casual, low-pressure date ideas) if you’re planning a first meet up with a new cutie you’ve been messaging with online.

Midweek (Tuesday through Thursday) Happy Hours.

Dinner dates can seem like high-pressure interviews when you’re first getting to know someone. For a more casual option, opt for a happy-hour date. Most restaurants and bars have drink specials between 5 and 7 p.m. (although some places start as early as 3 p.m.!) so you can enjoy the company of a potential match without breaking your budget. The great thing about this time is that the venue atmosphere is typically more relaxed and fun, with some spots hosting live music, karaoke, or even trivia night during these prime-time hours when people need to unwind from work. Just be sure to keep your drinking under control. No one wants to take care of Tipsy McStaggers on a date!

Saturday Mornings.

As long as you’re recovering well from Friday night activities, Saturday mornings can work well for first dates. If your AM routine normally includes working out, why not keep physical activity in and get to know someone new at the same time? Hiking, a game of mini-golf, or just taking nice stroll around the city park works well if you and your match are active (and morning people). Plus? Since you’ll be done relatively early, you’ll have plenty of time to make other plans with friends.

Sunday Afternoons.

If you’ve had a stressful week, it’s nice to put a day between the end of the workweek and a first meet up so that you can relax and really be refreshed when meeting someone new. A Sunday date lets you chat freely about all the fun things you’ve already done over the weekend, and puts you in a laidback mindset for the upcoming week. Since it’s low key, grab coffee or tea at a cute café, where you’re sure to find a small bite to eat while you talk.
