Summer Getaways: In It For The Long Haul

Whether you’re brand new lovebirds or celebrating your 10-year anniversary, every relationship deserves a summer getaway. This is part of a four-week long series on the best summer vacation ideas based on your relationship status.
Whether you’ve been committed for a few years or are coming up on your 25th anniversary, being in it for the long haul deserves celebration. But do you ever catch your mind wandering back to what it used to be like when you were just learning about each other? Or wish your relationship could have that feeling of newness again? Before you make a big mistake and head over to Ashley Madison, an exotic trip could do just the trick. And in this case, exotic has many different meanings. Here are some fun tips to make your next vacation memorable in more ways than one.
Skip the timeshare this year. Long-term couples, especially when families are involved, tend to fall into a rut of doing a yearly vacation to the same places whether you have a country house, a timeshare at the beach or you take the Disney route. When this happens, there’s nothing special about the trip, it just becomes this thing you do each year to pass the time. Instead, drop off the kids at your in-laws and head for the horizon. Always wanted to go to Paris? Head for the Eiffel Tower! A special, once-in-a-lifetime trip will have you rediscovering each other as you discover a new place and culture for the first time.
Do something outside of your comfort zone. When you do something you’re a little uncomfortable with, you’re instantly open to more experiences around you. Scared of that weird local dish that you’ve never heard of on the menu? Try it anyway. Not too fond of heights? Try zip lining across the forest if your vacation allows for it. You only live once, and you might only be at this destination once, so look back with no regrets. Remember, the worst thing that could happen is that you get a great story out of it.
Pack some goodies. Just because this isn’t your first romp in the sack doesn’t mean you can’t have some fun. Sexy little extras like lingerie or fun games can really spice up the trip and your love life. Just think about it — you’re in a far away land, you step out of the shower after a long hike and see your partner waiting for you with a little lacy number you’ve never seen before. I can see you reaching for your passport now!
Do your research. It’s always nice to relax on the beach, but you don’t want your whole vacation to be one note. Do your research before you leave and pick out some fun activities to do together. Have you ever swam with dolphins in the Caribbean or taken a cooking class in Tuscany? Sharing an event you’ll only do once in your lifetime is something you’ll both remember for the rest of your lives, and will always make that trip special.
Talk to each other. No really — talk to each other. So many marriages fail because partners fall into the rut of everyday life and stop communicating with each other. When was the last time you asked your match what he or she wanted for the future and really listened? A trip is the perfect time for deeply personal conversations. You don’t have carpools or meetings or little league games to think about when you’re away, you only have each other, so take advantage of it!
